mLAN Graphic Patchbay
|
|
All devices connected in an mLAN network appear in the mLAN Graphic Patchbay as different colored blocks. In the picture below the audio connections of the network are displayed. The „connection“- menu gives the option to choose between the audio-, MIDI- and Wordclock-connection windows.
Clicking on the In/Out strips of the single blocks opens the virtual mLAN plugs. This example shows the audio outputs of the mLAN16E (optional mLAN board for MOTIF ES series) and the audio inputs of the 01x. The outputs 15 and 16 of the MOTIF ES are connected with the audio inputs 13 and 14 of the 01x, this way the audio signal of the MOTIF ES runs through the 01x for further mixing. The virtual mLAN MIDI plugs work the same way. So you just need a single Firewire cable between the daisy chained devices, all plugging and routing is done in the graphic Patchbay – and you can connect Yamaha’s i88x directly to the computer, even when it is daisy chained through the 01x. Also devices from manufacturers other than Yamaha are scanned by the Graphic Patchbay and can be used directly in the mLAN network studio.
The Graphic Patchbay offers a lot more options:
- Set the number of channels per device
Expand or reduce the number of channels for a better overview and to avoid an overload of the Firewire bus
- Set master of system with one click
Select the device that should be master in a system and choose “Single Master” from the connection menu
- Change name and color of device
- Graphic Patchbay as text editor
- Saving presets
Save as many presets as desired for different recording situations
- Saving templates
Like saving presets, but not fixed to certain models. E.g. a template can be recalled also if another 01x than the original is connected to the system.
- Simple audio-destination view

Storing of the connection data
|
|
The mLAN connection data is stored by the receiving device. Even when a bus reset occurs or the power is turned off, the mLAN connection data is preserved. After a bus reset occurs or the power is turned on, a receiving device will search for the transmitting device based on its stored mLAN connection data, and will re-establish the mLAN connections. This way you can first setup your connections with your computer. When disconnecting the computer the mLAN devices still remember the settings – e.g. the MOTIF ES connection with the 01x is stored and can then be used for a live gig without having to use the computer in a live situation. Do not forget to determine one of the two devices (01x or MOTIF ES) as Word Clock master if you first have setup the computer as master. A live setup for a keyboard player has never been faster! An ID unique to each device is embedded in each node. The receiving device remembers the transmitting device by this ID. This means that even if the model of device is identical, the mLAN connection will not be restored if the ID is different. For example in the mLAN connection example shown above, the 01x remembers that it received data from a certain MOTIF ES, but the mLAN connection will not be restored if a different MOTIF ES is connected.
If the transmitting device is not found, the mLAN connection data will be maintained, but the mLAN connection will not be restored. The mLAN connection will be restored when the transmitting device that could not be found is then connected. However if a different mLAN connection is established before this occurs, the mLAN connection will not be restored. For example in the case of the above mLAN connection example, the 01x will preserve the mLAN connection data even when the MOTIF ES is disconnected. When the MOTIF ES is connected once again, the connection will be restored. However if, while the MOTIF ES is disconnected, the user establishes an mLAN connection using the Graphic Patchbay to a different instrument on channel 2 (the mLAN plug on which an mLAN connection had been established with the MOTIF ES), the mLAN connection will be overwritten. Subsequently even if the instrument is disconnected and the MOTIF ES is reconnected, the 01X will remember the mLAN connection with the instrument. Accordingly the mLAN connection with the MOTIF ES will not be recovered.
